About Me

Hi, I’m Karen.

I am a spiritual director, writer, and facilitator accompanying those who long for a more expansive integration of faith, justice, and identities. I work with BIPOC clients, primarily women and gender non-binary folks, in their pursuit of personal and communal healing. I especially love providing care to those actively engaged in social justice movement spaces. I am also especially committed to working with those who have experienced religious trauma and are looking to redefine and reimagine what spirituality means for them.

I come from a lineage of healers

My great-grandfather was a herbal medicine practitioner in Cambodia who spent his life healing others through plant medicine. Inspired by his example, my mother became a nurse after immigrating to the United States. Rooted in my ancestral lineage as the descendant of healers, this practice is my way of contributing to healing in the world.

I am the child of immigrants and refugees

I have been rediscovering my identity and power as a Chinese-Cambodian-Vietnamese eldest daughter and child of immigrants and refugees. Shaped by my experiences in both culturally Buddhist and Christian evangelical contexts, I am committed to supporting other BIPOC individuals who long to connect their cultural and ancestral lineages with their faith practice.

I am a gentle but expansive space holder

For years, I fostered safe spaces for others without necessarily realizing that it was a gift of mine. In my early twenties, I was a retreat facilitator for college students asking hard questions about life purpose. I have also led cohorts that explored topics such as racial justice, belonging, generosity, and social impact leadership. From retreats to workshops to one-on-one spiritual direction sessions, I facilitate spaces of joy, embodiment, and deep listening.

MY STORY

Over the last five years, I have been on a journey towards integration and wholeness. While I grew up in a beloved immigrant community in East San Jose, CA, I attended a Christian high school and found myself trying to belong in predominantly white evangelical spaces for the next decade. After years of trying to make churches care about racial justice, I realized I could no longer keep sacrificing myself to attempt to change institutions from the inside.

There aren’t a lot of safe spiritual spaces that exist for people who are different, who don’t feel welcome in traditional church spaces, or have experienced religious trauma. I became a certified spiritual director through Liberated Together to accompany others in their healing, connecting or reconnecting with spirituality, and in becoming more fully themselves. I invite you to reimagine what’s possible with me.

MY VALUES

JOY

I believe that we need to regularly tend to our joy, challenging the long-held notion that holiness is synonymous with suffering.

EMBODIMENT

For too long, western Christianity has sought to separate us from our bodies. I long for integration of mind, body, and spirit.

ANCESTRAL EXPLORATION

I believe that recognizing the wisdom, resilience, and traumas passed down from past generations—whether biological or non-biological—can deepen our understanding of ourselves.

COLLECTIVE LIBERATION

I believe that we need a spirituality that is connected to everyday experience and rooted in a broader movement for justice and collective liberation.
